Text Messaging Scam

March 17, 2010

We've been made aware of text message scams that involve unsolicited text messages sent to cell phones. The message urges the recipient to call a number provided for account discrepancies and then solicits individual account information and pin numbers or claims that their debit cards have been deactivated.
  • Such messages should be deleted and removed
  • If you feel you are a victim of this scam, contact us immediately

Most recently, a specific text message references a real financial institution.

Example text message scam:

Automated message from <<Financial Institution Name>>

ATM has been suspended

To reactivate call urgent @

1-800-773-XXXX

Extra Credit Union employees are aware of these scams and strongly urge you to be aware of who and what is going on around you. If you receive a text message you are unsure about asking you to provide personal information, the smartest thing to do is to not respond. Please be aware that these are scams, and remember that Extra Credit Union will NEVER text you seeking account numbers or passwords.
