Work from home job scam

July 1, 2009 -
The latest scam to hit the Internet has just arrived from Nigeria: Jobs for people seeking part-time positionscalled "mail assistants" for work done at home. Vacancies are posted on Craigslist.com under the name of ABS Consulting. Based in the country of Luxembourg, ABS purports to have facilities throughout Europe, referred to as "Forward Luxembourg." It claims to be a leading global provider of risk-management services.

Job seekerstypically college students looking for summer workare told they will provide mail forwarding services for expatriates, international travelers, and seasonal workers around the world. They are asked to perform simple tasks:

Receive mail at home.

Scan the front of each envelope received.

E-mail scanned images to the company.

Ship accumulated mail biweekly, using prepaid UPS or FedEx postage labels provided via e-mail.

After two weeks on the job, assistants get an e-mail promising an $800 paycheck, plus an extra $200 bonus. But to test their "integrity," theyre told theyll get a check for $2,800and must mail a check back to return the extra money.

The $2,800 check may look legitimate butbig surpriseits bogus. So instead of getting paid, the college student now has to pay the bank the full amount. Worse, the scammer now has access to the students checking account. And the student is committing a criminal violation by scanning victims mail.

The Postal Inspection Service is working to quickly shut down this scheme by attacking the problem from several angles. Conflicker Worm to Return April 1

March 30, 2009 -
On April 1, 2009, a computer worm known as Conflicker will be spreading rapidly through computers and networks. There is no clear indication of its purpose, but if you have implemented basic security on your system, youll be fine.

Using the most up-to-date software and security tools will protect your system from the malware. You are most likely safe if you are using a legal copy of Microsoft Windows, but if you have loaded an illegal copy without the proper anti-virus software, you are the ideal target for these types of viruses.

It is estimated that about 10 million PCs have been hit with the worm, but their users are unaware. Running freeware antivirus software will not protect your computer against this type of self propagating virus. Owners who have PCs infected with Conflicker will not be aware until April 1.

It is estimated that the worm will most likely send out mass amounts of e-mails containing spam or additional malware. If you have updated the necessary patches on your computer released by Microsoft on October 23, 2008, you should be safe from the vulnerability.

Experts suggest that you scan your PCs for viruses prior to the release of the worm. It is also important that you run a scan every so often to search for worms or other viruses in an effort to keep your computer running efficiently.

If you have any additional questions or concerns about Conflicker, or any other virus, please contact your software company.

Consumer Alert: Fake Credit Union

March 17, 2009 -
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. With the economy heading into a recession, many individuals are looking for the quickest way to earn a pennyeven if that means taking yours. Look out for scam artists offering you a break on your loan or a refinance deal that seems impossible.

In recent weeks, news of a fake Dearborn-based credit union has surfaced. The web site was promising that their mortgage specialists were there to help you buy a home, refinance a mortgage, or consolidate debt. The only problemthere was no credit union! Consumers contacted state regulators to report the activity, and a cease-and-desist order was issued. The web site has since been shut down.

Scam artists are stealing consumer identities by getting Social Security numbers through fraudulent applications, then using your bank account information to access funds, meanwhile opening up credit cards in your name. A common scam being conducted widely is to contact you pretending to be your financial institution and request that you verify your personal information.

Remember that Extra Credit Union will NEVER e-mail or call you seeking account numbers or passwords. Your financial institution already has your information on file and will only ask for it to verify your identity when you initiate a call or e-mail us. If you receive an e-mail asking you to visit a special web site to enter personal information, we urge you not to respond.

Feel free to contact us at (586)276-3000 for any questions.

October 7, 2008 -
Fear makes people do strange things. People who would normally not think twice about the money they have in the bank are stuffing it in mattresses and old coffee cans. Maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but the fear is very real. We all know that the information you get from the news is not always the most comprehensive. So when you hear the bits and pieces from TV or from friends, you might not get an accurate picture of your financial situation. Please remember, your money is safe at Extra Credit Union!

Deposit accounts at Extra Credit Union are federally insured by a fund that, like the FDIC, is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.

As the FDIC does for banks, the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) insures a person's savings up to at least $250,000*. There is also separate insurance coverage of up to $250,000 for individual retirement accounts.

The NCUA Insurance Call Center, operating from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (EDT) Monday through Friday, has insurance experts available to answer questions about the coverage provided by NCUA share insurance.
