Despite a great sense of uncertainty that has come about throughout the COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic, there has also been a great sense of unity as those in the community support one another in getting through this pandemic and remaining healthy and safe.
Extra Credit Union has compiled a list of helpful resources ranging from free meals and community resources for health and wellness, to options for emergency relief and free educational resources. Check them out below:
Meals:
- Many school districts and local food banks are distributing free meals daily. Check out this Detroit Free Press article for a full breakdown of what each district is doing, where and when.
Health & Wellness: It’s important to stay health both physically and mentally during this pandemic.
- Walks around your neighborhood are a great idea—and they’re free. Take the time to go for a walk daily.
- Visit a local park {it is advised not to let children play on local play structures during this time as they may contain germs}. Many local parks have paved trails through beautiful landscapes that may be a great escape. All of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks have free admission on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through April 2. If you visit a park on a day where many others have the same idea for a bit of fresh air, head the opposite direction or visit a different park and be sure to keep with the idea of 6-feet apart for good social distancing practice.
- MyIntent.org offers many free, online resources for both active fitness, as well as fitness for the mind, including dance workouts, meditation, yoga, ebooks and more.
- If working out has been on your list for a while, now may be a good time to start from the comfort of your own home. BeachBody is offering two free weeks of access to dozens of different fitness classes that can be streamed through your Smart TV, phone, tablet or computer. If you don’t want to pay, though, be sure to cancel your subscription once those two weeks have passed.
- Been thinking about getting a treadmill? If you have a little bit of extra cash, now might be the time. Several vendors, such as Dicks Sporting Goods, are offering big discounts for workout equipment as they know people may be interested right now. Take advantage of free shipping options or curbside, contactless pickup.
- YouTube is a great place to find hundreds of free videos offering meditation, yoga, workouts and even simply inspirational videos to keep your mind positive and uplifted.
Financial relief:
- Have you been laid off or did you lose your job due to COVID-19? Extra Credit Union has emergency relief options that can give you the cash you need to pay your bills and buy groceries during this pandemic.
- We understand everyone may have different financial concerns during this time. We urge you to contact us so that we can best determine how to help you:

Educational resources:
- USA Today has compiled a great list of free educational resources from celebrity storytime for your kids, lesson plans and worksheets, to ballet and drawing classes
- Popsugar has some equally-cool and useful resources to help keep kids busy while schools are closed for the foreseeable future. Resources include links to free guitar lesson from Fender, math games, mystery science and more.
- The Global Space Education Foundation has created Storytime From Space to share videos of astronauts reading stories about space while they are floating on various missions in space. Kids/parents can check out their recorded stories on the website. How cool is that??!!
