COVID-19 has changed life in many ways, most recently resulting in more job opportunities for young adults. Whether it is babysitting for your neighbor or going out and applying for a job at a big-box store, daycare facility, summer camp, fast-food or dine-in restaurant, or pretty much anywhere else—the opportunities are plentiful.
In fact, many restaurants and retailers are having to close their doors early or even for the entire day due to a shortage of staff members. The demand for workers is high, which means this is a great opportunity for young adults to apply. Some businesses are even offering sign-on bonuses of a couple hundred dollars simply for taking a job opportunity, coming to work and doing a good job.
According to Michigan.gov, the minimum legal age to work in Michigan is 14 {with a work permit}. There are also certain exceptions for ages 11-13. Be sure to discuss employment opportunities with your parents/caregivers and get the official OK.
Just think—the “extra” money you earn over this summer can go toward your car or college fund; senior year financial needs such as your yearbook, homecoming/prom, cap and gown, etc.; or other goals you have set for yourself.
We suggest depositing the money into your Extra Credit Union Youth Account so it doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket and you have nothing left to show for your hard work at the end of the summer. Remember to write your goals down and keep them SMART: specific, measurable, achievable/attainable, relevant, and time-bound.
