Extra Credit Union
Can Brighten Your Future

Our History & ECU Today

Early beginnings

A small group of educators with $856 in assets founded Extra Credit Union in 1954. The teachers actually operated the credit union in an unused high school classroom. Through a commitment to education, community and service, Extra Credit Union grew, and today has more than 19,000 members and $322 million in assets.

Serving the community

Extra Credit Union is known for its heart to serve by offering help, guidance, counsel, and programs for the entire community. We operate a full-service branch at our state-of-the-art headquarters in Warren and a lending center in Washington Township.

As the only credit union in Southeast Michigan to offer a certified K-12 financial curriculum, we provide hands-on learning, financial fundamentals, and customized services to help students make good financial decisions now for a brighter financial future. Your membership helps support essential school programs and services for teachers.

Join our growing community

We invite you to enjoy the benefits of genuine, personal attention, a true desire to see you succeed, and superior products and services tailored to your life, needs, and financial goals. Apply for membership today and experience the Extra Credit Union difference.

Why a Credit Union?

Credit unions are different from a bank–we’re a bit warmer and fuzzier. The services are the same—checking, savings, loans, etc. The difference is that you, the member, own this organization instead of the suits. We are:
Unlike commercial banks and savings institutions, a credit union has no stockholders. Our earnings are either reinvested into improved services or returned to members through higher returns on savings, reduced loan rates, and fewer/lower service fees. As an Extra Credit Union member, your savings accounts are insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, a federal government regulator and insurer for credit unions.
